Public Forum on Development of Trinidad and Tobago’s Smart Grid 2014

 Co-sponsored by The UWI, NIHERST

Our present day electrical power grids are based on ageing assets and are being challenged to deliver 21st Century needs. The smart grid can be regarded as a versatile system employing information technology, cyber secure communication technologies and computational intelligence in an integrated fashion across electricity generation, transmission, substations, distribution and consumption to achieve a system which is clean, safe, secure, reliable, resilient, efficient and sustainable. The Smart Grid is an opportunity to use new ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) to revolutionize the electrical power system.

The University of the West Indies along with T&T Electricity Commission (T&TEC), Telecommunication Authority of T & T (TATT) and Ministry of Energy has taken an initiative to evaluate the suitability of T&T power grid for deployment of smart grid technology. As a part of this initiative we are organizing this public forum to create awareness among general public regarding direct/indirect benefits of Smart Grid; its implementation challenges; initiatives of UWI, Government, T&TEC and NIHERST.
